Me Go Pee Pee in Your Coke

No one wins if the American economy tanks. For the last year or so the drumbeat has been pounding. America had gone from a creditor nation to a debtor nation and China holds the cards. It seems like every week I hear something new aboout the subject and none of it sounds good. Is this economic hype, fearmongering? I don't know I just know that empires have fallen because they've stretched their resources to the limit. France, Britaina, Spain, The USSR. China is the up and coming power and India is on the rise like no other country. What does this mean? I don't know beyond the fact that things change. That isn't an analysis just a mundane fact.

Cowboys and Indignants

I've never read a Larry McMurty book, but I really enjoyed this Q&A session with him in the NYT >>

I also like this question period with the Hitchens brothers from the Guardian >>,
What I like about these is that there seems to be no PR glaze slathered over things. It seems to be just people warts and all. But the cynic in me says maybe that is the PR colouring.

Back in Blueberry

Seems I spoke too soon. My little iMAc is alive and well although I did have to do a reinstallation and lost a lot of files. Luckily I had a foreshadowing of the problems and backed up most things. Still I lost a few things I would rather not have. It's funny how attached I am to this little blueberry bubble. We've been together a long time and generally without incident. Still it's time for an upgrade. And then I'm going to Boulder to Rock and Roll with my honey.

So Long My Old Friend

You have served me well. Now go and partake of your reward
For what is it to die, But to stand in the sun and melt into the wind? And when the Earth has claimed our limbs, Then we shall truly dance.

War Without Justification Fries

Walter Jones, the Republican congressman who coined the terms 'freedom fries' and 'freedom toast' now regrets the currency these terms have come to have. He in fact is now an ardent critic against the war in Iraq.

"If we were given misinformation intentionally by people in this administration, to commit the authority to send boys, and in some instances girls, to go into Iraq, that is wrong," he told the newspaper. "Congress must be told the truth."

Of course some men and women were sent to Iraq along with the boys and girls, but in any case he isn't towing the party line anymore.

Where I'm at These Days, In Song

High climbs the summer sun
High stands the corn
And tonight when my work is done
We will borrow your father's carriage
We will drink and prepare for marriage
Soon my darling, soon my darling

Shilling for the fellow who brings the sheep in
Shilling for the fellow who milks the herd
Shilling for the fellow with a wife for keeping
How can we feed love on a farmboy's wages?
Deep under winter snow
Deep lay the lambs
And tonight by the full moon's glow
Flask of wine on my feather bedding
We will drink and prepare for wedding
Soon my darling, soon my darling

People think that I'm no good
Painting pictures carving wood
be a rich man if I could
But the only job I do well is here on the farm
On the farm
And it's breaking my back

We will borrow your father's carriage
We will drink and prepare for marriage
Soon my darling, soon my darling

When I Was Almost a Horse

He Who Laughs Last Is a Little Slow on the Draw

The other night Leslie shared with me some of the many jokes in her vast repetoire and I was reminded of childhood days at my aunt Deanna's. She was always a great joke-teller specializing in what might be quaintly called off-colour humour. My cousins, her sons, had the same propensity for sharing jokes; the cruder the better. This evening I came across this New York Times article, Seriously, the Joke Is Dead. Maybe it's true that the practice of joke telling belongs to a different era, but I found her joke telling charming nonetheles, just like I like camp-fire ghost stories and old radio dramas. I have to remember to ask her if she knows that one about "bears that sodomize hunters" referred to in the article.

The Flintstones is Historically Accurate

Did you know that science is responsible for racism, pornography, school violence and gay marriage and that humans and dinosaurs co-existed? According to Ken Ham, science has undermined the authority of the Bible and this has led to 'moral relativism'. His solution to these and other sticky wickets, is to put science back in its place as the fraudulent enterprise it is and restore society to a pre-scientific age where homosexuality, violence, and racial intolerance were unheard of, you know, like in the Middle Ages. His masterplan is to uneducate the brain washed masses with his new $25,000,000 Creation Museum in Kentucky. There you will see non-scientific proof and non-methodical evidence that the earth is only 6,000 years old and that Noah loaded up his ark with dinosaurs. Apparantley Adam and Eve's favourite meal was bronto-burgers.

You scored as Cultural Creative. Cultural Creatives are probably the newest group to enter this realm. You are a modern thinker who tends to shy away from organized religion but still feels as if there is something greater than ourselves. You are very spiritual, even if you are not religious. Life has a meaning outside of the rational.

Last weekend rumour had it that the Liberal wizards were going to pull something out of their bag of tricks to save their collective butt, however I don't think anybody was quite expecting the announcement yesterday that high profile CP MP Belinda Stronach would cross-over and join the Liberals as Minister of Human Works. The Conservatives feel rightly betrayed and are not hesitating to use the word'traitor' at every oppportunity. However it doesn't come without an air of hypocrisy, since they are the party who has recently joined the Bloc Quebecois in a marriage of convenience to bring down the government and force an election. Outside of Quebec the Bloc is commonly regarded as institutionalized treachery. Interesting times for the country. If nothing else the news yesterday boosted the dollar, but in the bigger picture it was a historic event.

A Visit From Maman

Last Thursday I went to the National Gallery on a whim. It was a cold sunny day and I saw this giant spider on the horizon. Not a genetically modified freak escaped from some mad scientest's lab, but a sculpture by Louise Bourgeois and originally commissioned by the Tate Gallery. Maman also is a visitor at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg the Guggenheim and Havana. The National Gallery version is a bronze cast the version in the Tate is steel.

Clearing The Air

Last fall I found the following comment posted in the feedback to a blog entry. It upset me for a number of reasons, most of all because I thought I was on good terms with the individual. Also because I think that if you disagree with anything I have to say here in my 'home' I am open to discussion. Finally the tone of the piece I wrote was so absurd that anyone who knew me would know it was meant in jest. Obviously I hit a nerve.

Actually James, no one gives a shit. Quit drawing attention to yourself.

And all the Canadian "stars" left of their own free will, Probably because they never had a shot at much of anything up in canada. That's certainly why I left.

Where I live in los Angeles is no neo-theocracy. There's more tolerance and diversity here than any place i ever visited in canada. Cool out.
Last night after a long day of stress and 4 pints it occurred to me in the murky stream of unconsciousness that it was a good idea to drop these words back on the doorstep where they come from. It's not something I feel good about. I wouldn't do it again. It's better to let such nonsense go, but I clearly it was still bothering me.
